The question of the desirability of the continued
compulsory use of the characters
(ying shang)
as a prefix to the name when used in Chinese characters
of "China Companies" as defined by the Hongkong Compenies
Ordinance 1932 which is provided by fection 93 sub-section
(2) of that Ordinance, was discussed at a meeting of the
Joint Committee of the Eritish Chamber of Commerce, Ihanghai,
on the 17th February.
From the representations made to the Chamber by such
British distributing companies, it would appear that the
use of these charactere in the manner referred to above, is
at times liable seriously to prejudice the business of
these companies, particularly ss the regulations regarding
the use of the characters do not apply in general to
British companies carrying on business in China, but only
to British companies formed and registered under the
Ordinance, the operations or which are directed and con-
trolled from a place within the limits of the Chine Orders-
in Council.

commercial reason for the continued use of these characters;
that were their use discontinued British trading interests
in China would not suffer, and that the continued
compulsory use of these charactere is neither necessary
nor desirable.
In view of the foregoing, and as the only interests
concerned are those of China Companies as defined by the
Ordinance, my Committee have instructed me to bring the
